Should you self-host your Mastodon Server?

Mon Aug 12 2024

So it's been almost a month since I started to host my own . And it's doing great since then. But should you host your own server?

So firstly, hosting a Mastodon server isn't an easy task. You need to have a good knowledge about Linux servers and time for moderation.

Even on a single user Mastodon server, moderation takes like 50% of time spend on setting up and running the server. And the moderation on my case is mostly preventing and blocking spam.

After that it comes to federation part. By default your server isn't discoverable by others. Or your server can't find other servers because it basically doesn't knows others exists. To fix that you have to add relays to your server and follow others and etc. Then, you have to limit some domains of big servers like mastodon.social and bot servers like botsin.space to prevent their media attachments from filling up your servers storage and things goes like that.

And I'm not talking about how Mastodon consumes the resources of my server. the server I'm using for hosting has 120Gbs of storage, 8Gbs of RAM and a 8 core CPU and the load of server avarages around 60% of CPU usage and 7Gbs of RAM.

But as a Turkish adage tells, "there isn't any rose without thorn". Even tho getting a server up and running requires time and patience, it worth the value.

It gives you the true freedom and free speech. And most importantly, you're the real owner of the content you share.

But that freedom still can get your domain blocked on major mastodon servers. But you really need to be a internet troll to get your domain blocked. Because even tho I'm completely against that, I had to block some of them too.

My server is still fairly new, I have to let some time pass to tell the exact experience but those were the first 2 weeks experience. Hopefully I'll write an update post on that topic. Until that, thanks for checking out!
